Alan Rubin created a blend called Alec Bradley Prensado. Rubin had smoked a very dark wrapper leaf grown in a region of southern Honduras called Trojes and decided to build a cigar brand around it, using Central American tobacco exclusively. And what a cigar he made.

The brand hit the market in 2009 and was acclaimed from the very beginning. In a vertical brand tasting in Cigar Insider of the five original sizes, each scored 91 points or more and earned our accolade of Humidor Selection. The Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill, made at the superb Raices Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, is as gorgeous a cigar as you'll ever see, with a picture-perfect head and a stunning wrapper. But it is the flavor that makes it a classic smoke. The Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos come together to create leather, chocolate and spice notes, and a long, lush finish.

Not content with unearthing a new Nicaraguan variety, they aged the Estelí in rum casks for added depth and distinctiveness. Embarking through notes of roasted nuts, the taste gives way to oak wood and ends intensely with black coffee.

Due to the gran toro’s complexity, flavours and its full body, an ideal pairing companion to enhance the experience is a Nicaraguan rum. Its spicy notes and generally less sweet taste complement the cigar’s main aromas of roasted nuts, oak wood and black coffee nicely.

The Siete Oscuro cigar was created by Davidoff Master Blender Eladio Diaz as a gift to himself and his friends for his 60th birthday - The name takes reference to the blend of seven (Siete) tobaccos that is crowned by a dark (Oscuro) shade grown wrapper leaf.

Description

To celebrate the brands 20th Anniversary, Flor De Selva released the Egoista - a Short Robusto. The cigar is a Honduran Puro; a Habano wrapper from the Jamastran region, binder from Azacualpa and Olancho, and the filler is made up of Honduran tobaccos from various regions. Notes of cedar and white pepper amuse the palate during the first and second third with an intense nutty aroma and then transitions to spicy notes during the last thrid.

Hiram & Salomon Grand Architect Corojo Toro

The line features a blend highlighted by tobacco from Paraguay in the filler, alongside two types of Nicaraguan ligero. The binder is a Nicaraguan seco habano leaf from the Jalapa region, while the wrapper is a Nicaraguan corojo leaf. It is offered in 20-count boxes and all made at Plasencia Cigars S.A. in Esteli­, Nicaragua. The line gets its name from one of the founding principles of Freemasons, a reference to the Divine Being being known as humanity’s Master Builder or Great Architect, according to the company.

 

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars. 

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

Only 3000 boxes have been created. 

In October 2021 Oliva celebrated 135 years in the tobacco business and marked its long history with this limited edition Serie V Perfecto.

These commemorative cigars measure 5 1/2 x 54 and are presented in an eye-catching 12 count box with a fanned out display. Like the rest of the Olive Serie V range, these cigars are made in Nicaragua at the Tabolisa factory and are the same complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos, blended with fermented Jalapa Valley Ligero and finished with a high priming Sun Grown wrapper.

What a great cigar. The Padrón Serie 1926 No. 9 impressed the Cigar Aficionado tasting panel again and again, rising to the top after repeated tests to become the best cigar of the year of 2007.

In the end, when only a few cigars remained in the last blind tasting, this one stood above the rest: it was richer, rounder, more complex and rewarding than any other cigar they smoked.

This pressed beauty is rolled in the recently expanded Padrón factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, under the watchful eye of José Orlando Padrón, his son Jorge and the rest of the family members who ensure that the 5 million or so cigars they produce each year are of impeccable quality.

This is perhaps the finest of the line, just blossoming with flavour right from the first puff. It’s a complex smoke with perfect balance, showing flavours of chocolate, coffee and nuts, as well as some black cherry. The cigar has a finish so long it seems to never leave the palate. The 97 points is the highest score the Cigar Aficionado have given a cigar in many years.

Padrón Serie 1926 cigars are a bit stronger than the company’s other luxury line, the 1964 Anniversary Series, and are considerably more expensive. The family has an affinity for anniversaries: 1964 is the year the company began making cigars, and 1926 is the year José Orlando was born. The cigar debuted in 2002, on José Orlando’s 76th birthday, a year later than originally intended.

The Padróns have never finished out of the top five in the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 tastings, and this is the second time one of their cigars have been named the No. 1 cigar of the year.

Dámaso Padrón gave us life, family and our start in this industry. He was the first Padrón to 
arrive in Cuba in the late 1800’s from the Canary Islands – it is in his honor that we offer this cigar. 
This round, mild, flavorful, hand crafted and limited production cigar is made with Ecuadorian 
Connecticut wrapper.

To create something new, we looked to our past. The Dámaso line of cigars offers a complex mild to medium flavor 
profile crafted over five generations.

The Cigar

Fifty years ago this past September, José Orlando Padrón opened his doors in Miami and began selling cigars marked with his name. It was the most modest of ventures: one cigar roller, cigars that cost 25 cents apiece, and a future that was very far from certain. After a rough start, he listened to a customer who yearned for a fuma, the pig-tailed cigar type that Cuban rollers smoked. He changed his product and packaging and gave the customer the new cigar. Suddenly, he had a hit on his hands. Padróns have come a long way from those fuma days, and the company commemorated 50 years in business as the most decorated cigarmaker on the planet.

Three times Padróns have been named Cigar of the Year, and throughout the 10-year history of the award not only have they never failed to make the list, they have never finished outside of the top 10.This Padrón Family Reserve 50 Years Maduro is beautifully pressed, and it is steeped in notes of rich earth, coffee and that trademark cocoa bean quality. The Alma Fuerte Colorado Eduardo I is a Nicaraguan puro that uses a wrapper grown by the company in Nicaragua’s Jalapa region that is lighter than the main Alma Fuerte blend. The company says that the wrapper has been aged for 10 years prior to the cigars being rolled.
