#1 Cigar Aficionado Top 25 Cigars 2011

Alan Rubin created a blend called Alec Bradley Prensado. Rubin had smoked a very dark wrapper leaf grown in a region of southern Honduras called Trojes and decided to build a cigar brand around it, using Central American tobacco exclusively. And what a cigar he made.

The brand hit the market in 2009 and was acclaimed from the very beginning. In a vertical brand tasting in Cigar Insider of the five original sizes, each scored 91 points or more and earned our accolade of Humidor Selection. The Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill, made at the superb Raices Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, is as gorgeous a cigar as you'll ever see, with a picture-perfect head and a stunning wrapper. But it is the flavor that makes it a classic smoke. The Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos come together to create leather, chocolate and spice notes, and a long, lush finish.

Robert Caldwell's affinity for cigars began after visiting Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's factory in Little Havana when he was just 12 years old. Officially the cigar is simply called Anastasia but it is actually the fourth cigar to be released under this name, previous Anastasia releases had either blue or green bands but this release is the Anastasia Yellow Band. The Davidoff Aniversario No. 1 with its impressive size allows for a pronounced development of all three parts of the cigar, during which the blend's sophisticated taste is brought out nicely. Davidoff Black Band Limited Edition 2022 Gran Toro, a thick medley of sorts that combines tobacco from all three of its existing Black Band lines—Davidoff Nicaragua, Escurio and Yamasá.

At 5 1/2 inches long by 58 ring gauge, it’s made with an Ecuadoran wrapper, Brazilian binder and plenty of room for the filler blend of all the key Black Band tobaccos: Dominican, Nicaraguan and Brazilian.

In 1946, Zino Davidoff designed a line of cigars which would be crafted like classic Bordeaux wines. The blend would be selected depending on the soil and the climate in which the tobacco grew, just like the French ‘terroirs’. And just as Bordeaux wines blend three different main grapes, these cigars would feature three different fillers.

 Voilá, Davidoff Grand Cru cigars were born. Now, like the rich, ripe grapes of Bordeaux, the fruits of another piece of innovation have been harvested and turned into a truly remarkable cigar, one even more deserving of the title Grand Cru.

For the Diademas Finas Limited Edition Collection incorporates tobacco aged in Premier Grand Cru red wine casks from Bordeaux. In the spirit of Zino’s pioneering blends, this is the first time where a winecask aged tobacco has been used.

A San Vicente seco tobacco is matured for six months in the casks. As a result, the flavour carries the same notes which characterise the chateaux wines – dark cherries, walnuts and citrus. The combination rolls around in the mouth like wine being swirled in a glass. To add extra distinctiveness to this Limited Edition, it comes in the striking figurado format. The shape guides the palate towards the richness of the blend. Perfect to accompany a vintage bottle from France’s most celebrated wine region. For this is truly vintage Davidoff.

The Davidoff Grand Cru No. 2 is a slightly longer Corona, higher proportion of Ligero tobacco gives the complex nut and wood flavors of Grand Cru No. 2 unforeseen strength and depth. The Grand Cru No. 2 is mild in strenght, but full in complexed flavors.

In the Millennium blend, ligero and visus grade leaves come together for deep aromas. The unique 151 wrapper leaf contributes to an oily appearance and pronounced and complex flavours. Davidoff Millennium Piramides with its tapered head is crafted my the most highly skilled torcedores only. Its 52-ring gauge allows for the blend to give off intense flavours. Initially, daring notes of oak wood and coffee accompany aromas of sweet prunes. In the second third, dark chocolate complements intense bouquets of almonds and white pepper. At the cigar's grand finale, pronounced flavours of peat are finished with piquant white pepper and liquorice.

Story behind the cigar
Each Millennium format is made with a unique wrapper from Ecuador. It took the Master Blenders 300 trials before trial number 151 reached their demanding standards for a wrapper leave. Hybrid 151 grows under the tropical sun in Ecuador at a finca especially chosen for its location and its unique microclimate.

A new era of dynamic flavour begins. For the first time, Davidoff sets out from the Dominican Republic to explore new tobaccos and flavours in the wider world. And thus, the iconic Black Band graces a Davidoff cigar for the first time. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this modern classic, Davidoff's Master Blenders set out anew to explore, adventure and discover, this time to climb to new heights of taste to match Nicaragua’s volcanic peaks.

The result is an experience of another level.

The tobaccos in this Limited Edition have been aged for an incredible total of 45 years.

Adding to the already-aged filler, binder and wrapper, Davidoff's Master Blenders also introduced a 9-year-old Estelí tobacco to the mix for the first time. But still they continued to pursue the extraordinary.

Not content with unearthing a new Nicaraguan variety, they aged the Estelí in rum casks for added depth and distinctiveness. Embarking through notes of roasted nuts, the taste gives way to oak wood and ends intensely with black coffee.

Due to the gran toro’s complexity, flavours and its full body, an ideal pairing companion to enhance the experience is a Nicaraguan rum. Its spicy notes and generally less sweet taste complement the cigar’s main aromas of roasted nuts, oak wood and black coffee nicely.

The 12 gran toro cigars come in a wooden box which displays the carefully varnished Nicaragua pattern.

Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona, crafted as the first Nicaraguan Puro for the brand, promises an intense palate stimulation with notes of white pepper, roasted coffee, and dark bitter chocolate, combined in a 10-year-old Nicaraguan Habano Rosado wrapper. Experience full-bodied flavors in a smaller format. This cigar pairs especially well with a semi-sweet rum like Flor de Caña or a single malt whisky such as Bunnahabhain 12 Year.

The Siete Oscuro cigar was created by Davidoff Master Blender Eladio Diaz as a gift to himself and his friends for his 60th birthday - The name takes reference to the blend of seven (Siete) tobaccos that is crowned by a dark (Oscuro) shade grown wrapper leaf.

The dark, medium-bodied Toro cigar is charming with pronounced sweet nougat notes, deep coffee aromas and a compelling leathery flavour. Inspired by the autumn season with its obscure days and long nights when one finds comfort in more flavourful, sweeter cigars. 

The exceptional combination of aromas is supported by the vintage heritage: crafted in 2016 this small batch has been resting and ageing since.

Slightly more narrow than a standard Robusto format, the Davidoff Signature 6000 produces a dense, yet mild smoke that emphasises the elegant, woody, earthy aromas of the blend before giving way to a noticeably creamy aftertaste.

Davidoff has selected an oily Ecuadorian wrapper in a beautiful dark chocolate colour, introducing the first blend featuring tobacco aged in the finest Scotch single malt whisky casks. This Churchill format provides intense robust flavours of black pepper, dark sweet coffee, dark chocolate, vintage leather, wood and spice, creating tantalising palate stimulation and a rich bold aroma.

- Whisky: a malted, smooth, and complex selection with smoky notes.

- Beer: a typical, slight bitter Ale taste goes hand in hand with the robust oak wood, brioche, caramel and malt aromas of the Davidoff Winston Churchill Late Hour.

The Winston Churchill «The Original Series» petit panetela cigar which starts a little earthy with hints of spice and liquorice but then, against a backdrop of floral and herb notes, it begins to gradually mellow out for an enjoyable 25 minute complex and intensive smoking experience.
